The R-410A Phase-Out: AIM Act Impact on Your Home
By Omar Jacobo | EPA 608 #2396328 | April 2026
What is the AIM Act and how does it affect R-410A?
The American Innovation and Manufacturing (AIM) Act is federal legislation that requires a phasedown of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) like R-410A. As an EPA 608 certified technician who has worked with R-22, R-410A, and now R-454B, I've lived through two refrigerant transitions in my career.
The AIM Act sets a schedule to reduce HFC production by 85% by 2036. For homeowners, the key date was January 1, 2025 — after which all new residential AC equipment must use a lower-GWP refrigerant. R-410A served the industry well for over two decades, but its high global warming potential (GWP of 2,088) made it a target for regulation.
Can I still get my R-410A system serviced?
Absolutely. The phase-out only affects new equipment manufacturing. Your existing R-410A system can be serviced, repaired, and recharged for its entire remaining lifespan. At Frosty's HVAC, we carry R-410A and service R-410A systems daily across Farmers Branch, Coppell, Irving, Flower Mound, Lewisville, Grapevine. R-410A refrigerant will remain available for service use for many years.
Will R-410A prices go up?
Yes, gradually. As production quotas decrease under the AIM Act schedule, R-410A will become more expensive over time. We saw the same pattern with R-22 (Freon) — prices rose slowly for years before the final production cutoff. If your system needs a large recharge, that cost will increase over the coming years. This is one factor to consider when deciding whether to repair or replace.
What about R-22 systems that are still running?
R-22 (Freon) production ended in 2020. If you still have an R-22 system, it can only be serviced with reclaimed or recycled refrigerant, which is expensive. I generally recommend replacing R-22 systems when they need major repairs — the refrigerant cost alone often makes repair uneconomical. A new R-454B system will be dramatically more efficient and cheaper to operate.
What should DFW homeowners plan for?
Keep your current system maintained. Budget for your eventual replacement knowing it will be an R-454B system. When that time comes, you'll benefit from higher efficiency, lower environmental impact, and the latest SEER2 standards. Don't panic-buy or rush to replace a working system.
